Mullaloo Longboarders Club News 2008

Club Newsletter April 2008.

Finally! Sorry it’s been a long time between newsletters but The Secretary has been very busy with university and work commitments as well as other more important commitments such as surfing and partying.

It’s been a busy couple of months since the last newsletter. Since then we’ve had Madness round 1, The Bombing Range Cup, a Noosa trip (for the lucky ones), the first state round and a whole lot of ordinary surf… except for one epic day on the Thursday before our February meeting. Huey has been very nice to us longboarders with all events here in W.A been held in good surf.

Before we get into comp news here’s just a quick rant about the worst summer ever (but most summers are… unless we get lucky). December began with the never-ending southerly wind, which just refused to turn to the north-east. The odd good session was had a claytons in December but that bank did a Harold Holt and still hasn’t returned. So how did we end up with no sandbanks and beaches so wide you would think you were in the Sahara desert? All day easterly winds with the daily sea breeze sometimes going a whole week without making an appearance and the usual summer no swell factor. January was the worst ever, heaps of offshore winds but no-where to surf. February showed glimpses of magic with a handful of epic days amongst another month of only ok surf. Autumn has so far produced nothing special… but fingers crossed and hopefully we’ll score some autumn magic pretty soon.

Madness Round One saw epic surf all day long!

Madness Round One

Bombing Range Cup

Mullaloo Longboarders emerged the victors for the second consecutive year in the annual Bombing Range Cup inter club competition with Cottesloe Longboarders on Sunday February 24th.

Apart from the beautifully crafted cup itself we also win bragging and territorial rights to the classic waves of the Bombing Range.

The conditions went from fairly good to brilliant as the day progressed, with a nice warm summer day and warm clear water as well as some fantastic waves. The Bombing Range can throw up some bloody good waves when the rest of the coast is nearly flat and that was the case again. Those who thought it wasn’t worth coming certainly missed out .

The competition started on time thanks to Brad, and Andre from Cottesloe and Mullaloo lead right from the beginning.

Tim Fitzpatrick did a great job as head judge, but such was the excitement on the beach from both teams there ended up being about 15 head judges in the judges tent, but not one head waiter.

The standard of surfing from everyone was high and the turn out from both clubs ensures that this will be hotly contested for years to come. The event itself is contested in the good natured competitive spirit that exists between both clubs and it was good to catch up with the Cott crew, and beat them!!

Some of the highlights of the day included Mullaz young gun Mike McCormick’s nine point ride, Ryan Clark’s deep free surf barrel and Peter Dunn’s fantastic SUP exhibition, as well as a unnamed Mullaloo member who managed an average of ones for his best two waves, but came back with a strong performance in his second heat.

First State Round

The state rounds this year have received a new major sponsor, Sunova Surfboards. It is very important to have major sponsors in events like these to ensure everything runs smoothly and to help with overall costs and state team costs, so thankyou to Sunova Surfboards for supporting the events this year.

So the Sunova Surfboards State Longboard Series round one was held in surprisingly good surf. Those who arrived on Friday were greeted with conditions that resembled a lake and many were left wondering what we were going to surf in the comp the next day. Others were driving down that night or early morning dodging roos and thinking about paddling around in a lake all weekend. The reports on Friday night were for an increasing swell into the weekend, so there was still hope.

So all competitors crawled out of bed not expecting much, stumbled to have a look at Yallingup and were extremely surprised to see it was pumping! A north-westerly swell (yes a NORTH WESTERLY SWELL, the only one in my lifetime) was pumping in from the middle of the bay and producing some of the best right handers seen in a long time. Saturday had some truly classic waves and the contest and free surfing sessions were hot. Barry “ it’s still all about me “ McKinnon stole the show with a very deep and long barrel that was horribly underscored by the judges, a 7.2 score was a bit mean it should have been about 9 at least. That aside it was a great weekend. Check the Surfing WA website for results.

LONG GROM 2008

Check the website for all the pics of the Long Grom Event, held last month at Lancelin back beach. This was a very successful event, with a record number of entries , plenty of prizes and good surf. Thanks go to Dave Flower and Gary and Lee McCormick for their efforts in organising the event, the kids loved it. Also plenty of thanks to the many sponsors who are listed on our website as well as those Cottesloe, Indian Ocean and Mullaloo members who unselfishly gave their time even though many did not have kids competing. Credit must also go to Jo and Tammy who spent all day on the beach officiating while throthing at the bit to get in the water, they are two very surf stoked individuals who controlled their urge to surf to help out. …unlike a certain club president who snuck out the back and picked off a couple of screamers in between lifeguard duties.

OCEAN REEF MARINA PROJECT

Congratulations to Rohan Tillbrook for being selected onto the community advisory committee for the Ocean Reef Marina project. Congratulations to the Mayor of Joondalup Troy Pickard who has listened to the concerns of surfers and taken those concerns very seriously. Troy will head up the committee and having Rohan chosen is a win for surfers. Troy Pickard advised that the development will probably be eastward and not westward or north, which should not effect the surf, however the needs of the surfing community will be considered if the development looks like threatening the surf. Rohan submitted a very well balanced discussion on the future of the area including wider community interests such as environmental and recreational issues.

NEW MEMBERS

Congratulations and welcome to our new members –

CONTRIBUTIONS PLEASE

We would like some contributions to the news letter from members. It is pretty hard trying to think this diatribe up for each issue when we get little contribution, and to a certain person called Buster Gonad who emailed his view on things, that’s fine but how about some assistance. Thanks to Brad, Gary, Kevin and the Major for their contribution.

LEST WE FORGET

It’s a little late, but with ANZAC DAY recently celebrated let’s not forget those who have defended our way of life in various conflicts especially the nearly 500,000 Australians who were killed or injured. So let’s look forward to the winter/spring surf season and just occasionally think about those who made it possible to enjoy our life style.

Next Issue… Noosa 2008

Yallingup

Many thanks to Peter Dunn from Funs Back Surf for his generous donation of prizes for 2008.

New Postal Address

The club has a new postal address which is as follows: PO Box 6121 Girrawheen 6064. Please ensure any corresspondence is directed to that address in the future.

Clearwater comes onboard as local board sponsor.

I ran into Steve Del Rosso better known as SDR at the Whalebone and approached him to come on board as our local board sponsor.

Steve was happy to do that and offers club members 10% off his boards which equates to $900 - $950 for a board, obviously more if you want a flash colour job or mural.

His logo on the sponsors page is linked to his website so make sure you have a look. A number of members in the club already are riding his boards and love em including Jason Belcher, Brad Belcher, Ryan Clark and Kev Saunders.

So if you're wondering how they go, ask the guys and I'm sure they'll be happy to let you know.

Like any sponsorship the level of support is subject to the level of patronage we provide them, so support all our sponsors and think of them whenever you are in need of something they provide.
